A tawny-coloured fungus that grows in groups on the trunks of oak and beech trees, usually near the base
The stem is tough, grooved and twisted, and shaped like a spindle, i.e. thickening at the centre
Up to 6 cm across the cap and 9 cm tall; inedible because of its toughness
